Fieldsharks
A Willerby Short
The fields around Willerby follow the usual seasonal rhythm.
Bare and hard in the cold frozen months, muddy and rich in the wet early spring and then carpeted green as the life within them rises from the soil.
As May warms to June the fresh green ripens to dark and to yellow and gold and it is then the local farmland knits itself to the eternal fields that go far, far beyond our world.
It is from these strange dimensions the fieldsharks come.
Follow the rules and there is little reason to fear them. They know to stay away from the old rights of way and the sight of one from afar, its great two metre dorsal knifing through the corn or wheat is a magnificent sight.
But in the summer only fools wander off the paths, for the sharks are silent, swift and merciless.
